August 10, 11, 12, 2012 Towey Gathering The Towey Gathering will be held in Rochester, MN over the weekend of August 10, 11, 12 of 2012. It's intentionally set to coincide with the Annual Irish Fair in St Paul. Click 2012 Towey Activities for more information.
The Clan's objective is to preserve and expand knowledge about the heritage of people bearing the Towey surname. Through research and education, we seek to compile a central archive of relevant genealogical and historical information from around the globe and to make this information freely available to all enquirers.
Where is the “Home Area” of the Toweys? People bearing the Irish surname of Towey trace their ancestry primarily to four parishes - Kilcolman, Castlemore, Kilbeagh and Kilmovee - in the vicinity of the town of Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. These four parishes form the northern half of Costello Barony and are roughly coextensive with the ancient territory known as Sliabh Lugha. What is the Origin of the Towey Surname? At present, any one answer to this question is controversial, so we have learned to live tentatively with two explanations: (1) Some of us have been told by our elders that we are descendants of members of the Touhy family from Co. Cork who fled the warfare in that area during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. (2) Other Toweys uphold the tradition that we were originally members of an O'Neill sept which
was transplanted from Co. Tyrone by Oliver Cromwell in the mid-17th century. We also debate whether it is legitimate to consider ourselves part of Ireland's Chlann Tuathaigh. Other origins have been claimed for (but not “by”) us too, and all of these are discussed further in the About Us web page.
Do Towey's Have a Clan Constitution?
The Towey Clan Constitution was developed and approved at the Annual General Meeting held at The Foxhunter, Lucan, Co. Dublin, Ireland on 14 April 2001. Click here here for reading a copy of the Towey Clan Constitution.
What are the Clan's Activities? Periodic Clan gatherings at Ballaghaderrreen, Ireland as listed in the left navigation menu. Besides debating family history, we also advise our members of the clan who are actively engaged in their own genealogical research. Most recently, we initiated a Y-DNA project to help male members confirm their Towey heritage when conventional records do not exist. This Clan website charts the Irish origins and world-wide progress of the Towey
Clan.
