The Towey Clan consists of persons with family names of Towey, Tuohy, Touey, Touy, Towy, Toey, Tooey, Toohey, Touhey, Towhey, Toowey. Twohy, Twohey and Tully, originating in the Vicinity of Ballaghaderreen, Ireland.
Most
people bearing the Towey surname now and in times past can trace their origins
to the area around the Irish town of Ballaghaderreen, on the border where
the counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo meet. Historically, this vicinity is called “Sliabh Lugha”, and it is
comprised of the four Irish parishes of Castlemore, Kilcolman, Kilmovee and Kilbeagh.[1]
There are Toweys and local variants in the spelling - Touy, Touhy,
Tuohy, etc. - in each of these parishes, though most are in Castlemore and
Kilcolman.[2]
(There are also a few Towey families in Tibohine parish – known also
nowadays as Fairymount – to the southeast of Ballaghaderreen). Until the late
19th Century, most of Sliabh Lugha was located within Co. Mayo, but
with pieces in Sligo and Roscommon; then in 1898 Castlemore and the non-Sligo
portion of Kilcolman were shifted into Co. Roscommon for governmental
convenience.

Watch this www.toweyclan.com web site for Gthering information.
We have no membership fees or dues. It's your choice whether to attend either of these Gatherings and we hope to see you there.
Footnotes: [1]
The ancient borders of the four Catholic parishes in Sliabh Lugha do not
exactly correspond with the modern civil parishes of the same names. The
changes of civil jurisdiction have had no effect on the Church’s borders for
the diocese of Achonry; where incidentally the see was relocated from Achonry
to Ballaghaderreen in 1831 after more than a century of non-resident bishops. [2]
The Toweys are to be distinguished from the Touhys, Towhigs and Tuohys
of the southern counties such as Cork and Galway; though at least some of them claim an ancient connection with the Touhys of
Cork. In turn, the Touhys are widely
regarded as a sept of the Galway Tuohys.
(The marriage of Broher-born Margaret Towey with the Galway/Clare
native Edward Tuohy in far-off Chatfield, MN in 1861 appears to be entirely
fortuitous, in both senses of the term).
For much of the 19th century, accuracy and consistency in
spelling were not treated as the virtues which they are today.
